PUBG Servers Have Ditched Amazon for Microsoft Azure

4,060

In the wake of recent technical and connectivity woes, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) has moved to a new online service provider for a more stable server infrastructure.

The popular battle royale game has been running on Amazon Web Services (AWS) since it entered early access on Steam in late March. PUBG Corp. has now decided to ditch the on-demand cloud-computing platform from the retail giant in favor of Microsoft Azure.

The transition was confirmed by the company (via Overclock3D) during its recent earnings call for the first quarter, with chief operating officer Satya Nadella pointing out that Microsoft has a “big opportunity” in the cloud for intensive games and applications.

“Gaming pushes the boundaries of hardware and software innovation, with some of the most CPU and GPU-intensive applications and content, giving us a huge opportunity in the cloud,” Nadella told investors. “As one example, PUBG Corp., with the hit game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, is not only partnering to make Xbox the exclusive console at launch, but is also running on Azure.”

Other popular multiplayer games running on Microsoft Azure include Rainbow Six Siege, Titanfall, Halo 5: Guardians, Hitman, and Forza Motorsport 7.

It is too soon to explicitly state any performance enhancements that PUBG will see from the new server infrastructure. We can only hope that the transition will yield favorable results for the community.
